Small Claims Court

Small Claims Court, not unlike Judge Judy or The People’s Court, is a Court for cases involving claims of less than $5,000.  The matter you bring to court may be about any type of civil law.  The Small Claims Court can award money damages, plus court costs, or the return of personal property.  The advantages to Small Claims Court are that cases are decided quickly, inexpensively, hearings are informal, and both sides appear without lawyers.

I assist people who are filing or responding to Small Claims complaints and ask for help to understand the law of their matter and how to present their case.  I help sort out the issues and show how to present your story through evidence such as documents and witnesses.  You need to know what is relevant and should be presented, and what is irrelevant and unnecessary to tell.  I also provide advice on what to say to the judge, your opposing party, and any witnesses that may be called by either party.

What Does This Service Cost?
I have two low-cost packages.  Each involves a consultation where we will discuss the law applicable to your case and review your paperwork and answers any questions you have.  The Consultation package is a flat fee of $150.  The Trial-preparation package provides assistance in the organization of your evidence into documents to be used as exhibits, in the use or subpoena of witnesses, and preparation of you to take your case to trial.  The Trial Preparation package is a flat fee of $350.  We will always discuss whether Small Claims Court is the best option for your situation and the pros and cons of filing in Circuit Court.
